This is really excellent, Mike. I particularly like the closing. I'd pimp this post in my own blog right away but it'll have to wait until I have more time and better access. For the record, this is why you are the superhero in my book and also why I **NEVER** cover legislatures. The confrontation at the Tea Party Convention was bad enough; the first time someone tried physically manhandling me I would earn my detention by breaking their nose with a head-butt. You are a stronger man than me, sir!

I will agree with you that it is a racket, but it's a racket designed to allow these men and women to come and go as they please so that they can do what they were sent to Washington D.C. to do. Much of the "tolerance" for allowing a Member to defend themselves from the public is rooted in over two hundred years of smash-mouth politics, going all the way back to riots in the streets and assassination attempts.
